Raging Rapids

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon. We just got back from a ski trip and I was unpacking, regrouping, and cycling several loads of laundry. The kids were watching TV/ playing computer games. I was exhausted, but I felt like I needed to step in and get them to snap out of their zombie stares. The creek level was so high, and it was one of the warmest days we’ve had in a long time.

I asked “who wants to take a walk to see the creek!?” They didn’t hesitate. The screens turned off and they jumped up. This made me feel guilty for even debating on whether or not to offer the excursion.

Soon after we got to the creek, we found a weathered rubber duck. Actually, it was a rubber UNICORN duck. The idea was born, to send it on an adventure! Across the raging rapids of the creek, it sailed in an old box we had laying around. For several minutes, we enjoyed the excitement of following this unicorn duck downstream. THEN, we lost it.

After a few minutes of disappointment, we moved on to play and explore. The creek seemed to be washing away the last of Winter, and I was so intrigued by early signs of spring… as well as remnants of Autumn.

And then there was Lee. In his pursuits of heavy logs to lift, and gritty soil to handle, it hit me that everything he needs to satisfy his quirks of sensory processing disorder is right in our backyard. I have to think that this is of course part of God’s design. Perhaps connecting with the Earth is one big way to cope with the realities of life on Earth.
